Awards haul for student television XTV

The University of Exeter's student television station, XTV, won four first place awards at last weekend’s National Student Television Awards.

They won Best Comedy for The Adam and Laurie Show, Best Drama for Finals, Best Factual for Cameo's coverage of The 52nd BFI London Film Festival and Best Video to Music (Music Video) 'You and Me'.

Rich Jones was Highly Commended as Best On-screen Male.

This was XTV’s biggest win yet having taken away 2 'Best' and 3 'Highly Commended' last year. Based on the number of wins, XTV is now ranked second in the country after Leeds' LSTV.

The conference itself was held at the University of Southampton and attended by over 15 national student television stations. The judging panel included James Laidler, producer for BBC Breakfast, Justin Judd of Granada and many others. The conference was the best yet and will be held at the University of Glasgow next year.

Laurie Blake, Former Station Manager and 3rd Year English Student said: "This has been XTVs best year ever. We are so proud of our members' hard work and dedication over the past year especially as we have so few facilities and no formal training. Exeter is lucky to have such committed and talented students who make our media among the best in country. This has been the making of my university experience."

Fellow former Station Manager Adam Mason adds: “Considering that many other University’s stations' members are on broadcast media or television courses, this success shows the dedication and hard work of the XTV members who are self taught. Whereas we do not currently have access to studio facilities or the latest industry equipment, our creativity has seen XTV rise from a relatively unknown station to one to be reckoned with in a period of just four years.”

XTV is supported by the former Head of Entertainment and Comedy at ITV, Paul Jackson, a university alumnus who last year donated money to XTV to buy a new industry standard camera. He also visits annually to give help and advice to our members.
