University chefs in culinary contest

Inspired by the likes of Masterchef and Ready Steady Cook, chefs at the University of Exeter took part in their very own cookery competition on Thursday 30 July.

Seven teams, comprised of staff from the different catering outlets around the University, went head to head in the Inter Chef Challenge 2009.

Using a prescribed set of ingredients and working within strict time limitations, the chefs prepared their dishes ‘live’ in specially designed mini-kitchens. Their chosen menus included delicacies such as piquant goats cheese and grilled pepper terrine, pressed chicken confit bound with foie gras and pear and ricotta cheese torte, walnut cream and praline parfait. They were watched by members of the Campus Services team who also competed against each other for the best dressed table.

The overall winner of the Inter Chef Challenge Trophy 2009 was the team from Holland Hall led by head chef, Aaron Tong.

Commenting on the competition, Geoff Pringle, director of campus services, said "Whilst this event is obviously great fun, there is a serious purpose behind it. It allows our catering staff to show off their talents to their managers and other colleagues from around the University and it’s a fantastic show case that demonstrates the breadth of their culinary skills - from student catering to gala events and high profile dinners and receptions."
