Hugh’s capital role

The University of Exeter has appointed Hugh McCann as Director of Estate Development, to oversee forthcoming capital projects investing £450 million in campus facilities.

Hugh leads a team of 30, delivering projects over the next 3 years that include the £40 million Forum project, expansion of the Business School, and refurbishment of science buildings.

The team works closely with consultants and contractors, mainly South West companies, as well as internal liaison with University staff.

Speaking on his appointment, Hugh McCann says: “This is an exciting time in the development of the University’s estate, and I am delighted to be leading an experienced team to ensure the smooth delivery of new facilities.”

Hugh has been in the buildings industry for 25 years, starting in an architect’s office and qualifying as a chartered surveyor, as well as gaining site experience with Balfour Beatty. He has worked at the University of Exeter since 2000, and was formerly Deputy Director of Buildings and Estates.

Jeremy Lindley, Director of Corporate Services, says: “The University is currently undergoing an ambitious investment programme designed to help make Exeter a world centre for teaching and research. The capital projects that Hugh’s team are managing have far-reaching impact on the city and the region.”

In total, the University is looking to invest £450 million in its campuses (including in Cornwall) between now and 2020. £235 million worth of projects are about to be submitted for planning approval to be delivered between now and 2012. The University will be working with Exeter City Council to produce a Masterplan for future development.
