Exeter presents future of biomedical research
Local people will have the opportunity to hear about the future one of biomedical research from one of its key representatives.
Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council Sir Leszek Borysiewicz PhD, FRS, FRCP, FRCPath, FMedSci, will give a free public lecture at the University of Exeter on Thursday 2 July 2009.
The lecture, entitled Shaping the future of biomedical research, is the latest in a series of Shaping the Future events, organised by the University of Exeter and supported by the Met Office, to bring business, science and the community together.
Sir Leszek Borysiewicz has been Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council (MRC) since 2007. Prior to the MRC he was Deputy Rector at Imperial College London. He was knighted in 2001 for his research into developing vaccines, including a vaccine to prevent the development of cervical cancer. A physician by training, Sir Leszek specialises in viral immunology, infectious diseases, cell mediated immunology, virus associated malignancy and vaccine development.
He has held a number of high-profile posts including governor of the Wellcome Trust, a council member of Cancer Research UK and a trustee of the Nuffield Trust.
