Exeter student a hit with the dragons
A recent appearance by Emily Webb, a final year Business and Management student, on Dragons Den has given a real boost to her company, Oarsome Potential.
In 2005 as a GCSE A* project, Emily developed the design for her specialist rowers hand grip.
Since then, Emily’s innovation has won her a silver medal at the World Invention Show and medals and awards at the British Invention Show as well as the opportunity to pitch her product in the Dragons Den.
Although Emily didn’t get the investment she was looking for, she can be justifiably proud of the comments made by the Dragons. Theo Paphitis said, ‘I have never been in the Den with someone I have enjoyed listening to so much’; James Caan asked Emily to contact him when she finishes her degree at the University of Exeter as he would like to give her a job, Duncan Bannatyne echoed this and offered to help Emily with her business via his fitness gyms and mobility company.
Commenting on her experience in the Den Emily said ‘Whilst I’m obviously disappointed not to get the investment, I spent one and a half hours with the Dragons which was an invaluable experience. I’m determined to take my invention to the next level once I graduate, but it’s nice to know that I’ve also got a potential job offer waiting for me!’
Emily’s rowers hand grip is designed to reduce the risk of injury by enabling rowers to efficiently turn the blade minimising strain on their wrists which can cause tendonitis or repetitive strain injury. It also corrects technique and helps improve the performance of novice or competitive rowers which makes it an ideal training aid. The Oarsome Potential grip can also be used on indoor rowing machines to improve comfort and the position of the hands. More information can be found on www.oarsome-potential.co.uk.
