Exeter goes greener

The University of Exeter has been ranked 14th ‘greenest’ University in the UK, out of a total of 126 higher education institutions.

The People & Planet Green League Table 2009 has given Exeter a ‘First class award for environmental performance’.

Exeter has risen 22 places since last year, when it was ranked 37th in the UK in the People & Planet Green League Table.

The key factors behind Exeter’s rise this year are:

  • The reduction of the University’s carbon emissions by over 10% in two years
  • The appointment of a Sustainability Manager to promote and coordinate sustainability across the University’s diverse range of activities
  • The Student Guild achieving its Bronze Sound Impact Award from the National Union of Students, recognising the Guild’s strong environmental performance
  • Fair Trade status for the University’s hospitality outlets

University of Exeter Sustainability Manager Karen Gallagher said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have risen 22 places in the People & Planet Green League Table in just one year. This achievement is the result of commitment and hard work from staff and students across the University. We are very pleased to now be ranked 14th in the UK but are determined to do even better next year and are aiming to be one of the top ten greenest UK universities.”

People & Planet is the largest, student network in Britain campaigning to end world poverty, defend human rights and protect the environment.
