Local firms help University of Exeter students to finals of national competition

Teams of students from across the University came together in the battle to be chosen to represent Exeter in the Flux 500 national finals, being held in Plymouth on the 6-8 April 2009.

Local businesses acted as both the judging panel and advisors throughout the day long event. Companies who lent their much valued expertise included Michelmores, Pebble UK and Transition Consulting Limited.

In addition, the University was represented by Paul Tiltman and Robin Jackson.

With teams from across the University involved in the event, the competition was bound to be tough. The eventual winners were a team from the University’s Officer Training Corps comprising Vicky Chavasse (1st year Business & Management), Sarah Keane (1st year History and Economics), Rupert Laing (3rd year Politics), Tom Mcloughlin (4th Year French & German), Kate Quinn (3rd year Politics with Chinese) and Rebecca Wells (1st year Sustainable Development).

Kate Quinn, the team captain said ‘It was a fantastic experience to be involved in such a demanding business challenge. I’m now really looking forward to the training sessions with the business mentors before we rise to the occasion in Plymouth. With such incredible support from them and staff at the University, I feel confident that we’ll be able to compete at a national level and do Exeter proud!’

Rehman Noormohamed from Michelmores said ‘We’re delighted to be able to make a contribution to the business leaders of the future. There’s no substitute for some practical experience of the way things work in the real world and we were impressed by the students’ grasp of the issues. We have high hopes for them in the finals.’
