1,000 staff and students celebrate One World Week
Some 1,000 staff and students have celebrated One World Week at the University of Exeter.
From debates to drama workshops to African drumming, a series of events from 4-6 November celebrated the differences that bring us closer together.
Eminent speakers included actor and director Emma Thompson, writer and actor Kwame Kwei-Armah, Minister for UK Culture and Sport Ben Bradshaw MP, writer and poet Dorothea Smartt and LGBT History Month Founder Sue Sanders.
Staff and students took part in an African drumming and Nigerian story-telling session and Dorothea Smartt led a poetry workshop around the theme of race in writing. Emma Thompson led Drama students in workshops around the themes of identity, conflict and exclusion. Kwame Kwei-Armah and Emma Thompson also spoke about their experiences of artistry and activism at a public event.
A new exhibition, entitled The Southall Story, was launched with Bangra performances from Kuljit Bhamra & Shakila Maan. Visitors, staff and students also enjoyed Sudan East and West Exhibition: Red Sea Hills in Darfur, photographs sharing Islamic culture and long-distance trade, in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies.
The University of Exeter now has students from 120 different countries.
