Global Enterprise Week runs from 16 to 22 November.

Sir Bob Geldof supports Exeter student entrepreneurs

Two University of Exeter students, Harry Cott and Amanuel Burhan, will be launching the first ever Exeter Entrepreneurs Society during Global Entrepreneurship Week, taking place between 16th – 22nd November. Sir Bob Geldof, a serial entrepreneur himself, has agreed to be patron for an initial two year period.

The society has been established to encourage, promote and support innovative student enterprise from across the University and would-be entrepreneurs will be able to access seed capital funding from the Smart Solutions support package managed by the Innovation Centre.

Talking about his involvement with the society Sir Bob Geldof commented ‘The world’s a tough place for graduates right now and anything that helps them get started can only be a good thing. I wish the society every success.’

To raise awareness amongst students and contribute to student fundraising for local charities, the society is kicking off with an innovative competition - outRAGeous TRADERS. Participants will be provided with a memory stick which they will ‘trade’ for items of a greater value throughout the week. The winner will be the person with the highest value item at the end. All items will then be auctioned on-line and 80% of the proceeds donated to charity. The progress of Exeter’s outRAGeous TRADERS can be followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/ExEntrepreneurs.

This is only one of the events that the University will be running over the course of the week. There are workshops, courses and networking opportunities and the chance to participate in a business game - all designed to help enterprising students gain the skills they will need to run their own business.

Global Entrepreneurship Week is a worldwide movement of entrepreneurial people with millions unleashing their ideas and turning them into reality.

Smart Solutions involves a range of initiatives including Economic Challenge Investment Fund support for student and graduate entrepreneurs, from HEFCE; Knowledge Escalator support for University student entrepreneurs from the RDA and ERDF;Exeter Business Support from the Exeter City Council, in the form of a business advisor and Innovation Centre support in the form of space, business advisors and mentors.
