The lies and silences of biography revealed at University talk

Award-winning author Victoria Glendinning will share her experiences of writing biographies at the University of Exeter .

Victoria is author of numerous biographies, including those of Anthony Trollope and Vita Sackville-West, for which she won the Whitbread Prize for Biography. 

As part of the University of Exeter’s ‘Writers Series’ she will give a public talk at the Queens Building at 6pm on Wednesday 18 November.  

The British biographer is the Vice President of the Royal Society of Literature and also a novelist of high repute, with novels such as ‘Electricity’ and ‘The Grown Ups’.

Sam North, English lecturer at the University of Exeter said,‘Victoria Glendinning is one of the foremost literary biographers of our times, and she holds a reservoir of experience in writing about authors, their work and their lives, which will be of immense value to students.’

The ‘Writers Series’ is part of the University’s Centre for South West Writing, which exists to promote the appreciation of the region’s many important creative writers.  Future events will feature historical novelist Rose Tremain and children’s writer Philip Pullman, whose book ‘The Amber Spyglass’ became the first children’s book to win the overall Whitbread Award.  On the 10 Dec writer, Jay Griffiths will talk about her book, ‘Wild – An Elemental Journey.’  Well known critic and writer, John Berger said, ‘If bravery itself could write … it would write, I believe, like this.’

These special literary events are open public as well as University staff and students.  The £5.00 tickets for the Victoria Glendinning talk are available from the Exeter Phoenix Box Office. There is also the opportunity to pay on the night at Lecture Theatre 2, Queen’s Building, The Queens Drive, Streatham Campus.
