Dr John Withrington presents a prize to Gary Lau, winner of the men's singles

University strengthens links with local Chinese community

The Devon and Cornwall Chinese Association (DCCA) is celebrating its first badminton tournament, run for the Chinese community across the UK.

Almost 300 players from as far afield as Birmingham and Cambridge competed on 24 August, taking advantage of the University of Exeter’s extensive Sports Hall facilities.

The University of Exeter’s Dean of International Development, Dr John Withrington, presented the International Exeter Cup to the top players. Winner of the men’s singles was Gary Lau from Torquay and winner of the women’s singles was Bonny Mo from Plymouth. For a full list of winners, visit the Devon and Cornwall Chinese Association website.

Dr Withrington said, “This was an excellent way of bringing together Chinese players from across the country, and the University was pleased to be able to support this event. As the University of Exeter builds on its strengths as a Top 10 university, and a university with an international reputation, we look forward to working even more closely with the Association and other international bodies in the local and regional community”.

The event was covered by the South West regional television station ITV West Country, and Dr Withrington was interviewed by Phoenix TV as part of a programme that will be broadcast in the UK and mainland China.
