Exeter hosts senior government figures
The University played host to visits from five senior government figures on Friday 5 February.
The visits were part of the Cabinet's trip to Exeter.
The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs David Miliband gave a lecture to students and staff at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies. Along with Arts & Culture Minister and Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw he met with academics in the Institute to find out about their latest research.
Minister for Communities and Local Government John Denham visited academics working in Politics. He then had a tour of the Innovation Centre, where he met with University senior management and representatives from the South West Regional Development Agency. He visited the laboratories of international science-based company LGC information, based in the Innovation Centre and also had a presentation on a partnership between the University and QinetiQ around developing new technologies based on studying butterfly wings.
Attorney General Baroness Scotland met students and staff from Law. She heard about a project which Law students are running with local schools, to raise awareness of debt among young people.
Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell met with Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Smith and gave a lecture to students and staff about the Civil Service.
