West Side Story

Exeter University, in collaboration with the Exeter Northcott, will be performing the well-loved classic musical 'West Side Story' on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th June 2010.

'West Side Story', based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", brings to life the tragic tale of forbidden love and gang rivalry between the New York Jets and Puerto Rican Sharks.

Tony, a member of the Jets falls for Maria, sister of the Sharks leader in 1950s New York. The young lovers are caught in a bitter feud which is shared through such well known songs as 'Somewhere', 'I Feel Pretty', 'America' and 'Tonight'.  In an exciting opportunity, Exeter students have joined forces with University and Northcott staff to present one of Broadway's all time favourite musicals.

Marion Wood, Director of Music at the University, said, "There is so much talent in the University and this joint venture with the Exeter Northcott is a massive collaboration. A high calibre cast and orchestra have come forward to produce something truly unique".

A cross section of University students have come together for the challenge of putting together a performance of an all time favourite musical in two weeks. The third term at the University is traditionally a quiet one and so presented itself as the ideal opportunity to showcase the singers, dancers, actors and musicians that populate a very creative campus.

"The students have been outstanding. They have approached the material intelligently and it has been a pleasure to work alongside them over the past couple of weeks", says Marion.

Over 80 students are involved in this project and with West Side Story often considered as one of the best scores of all time, it will certainly be a night to remember!  Join them for fantastic dialogue, featured dance numbers and fabulous music - a guaranteed night of perfect entertainment.
