End of term rubbish gets the boot

Rubbish accumulating on the street causes problems at the end of the summer term, as students may leave before the day of their last refuse collection.

To tackle this, the ‘Students on the Move’ project will fund additional trucks to collect the additional refuse to keep the kerbsides clear.

It has been organised by the University of Exeter and the City Council and is supported by the Students’ Guild.  This year the project will run from Saturday 12 June until Monday 26 July 2010.

Over one thousand ‘Students on the Move’ packs will be delivered to student houses throughout Exeter by the University’s ten Student Community Wardens. These packs contain stickers for students to identify their rubbish bags and information leaflets about refuse and recycling.

Rory Cunningham. Community Liaison Officer said, ‘We understand that students don't always leave their premises on the same day at the end of term, so these additional collections provide much needed support. Our work with communities reveals that end of term refuse is a serious concern for both local residents and student residents alike. We believe this scheme is really worth the investment.’

Students on the Move’ is being re- launched following last year’s success, where the scheme helped to clear around 100 tonnes of waste from across the city.  Many local residents have praised the scheme, a resident of Culverland Road, said ‘This project has really made a difference to local residents. It is encouraging to see the University and the City Council working together and promoting these issues amongst students.’

Two ‘Community Clear-up Days’ will also take place in St James to collect the rubbish of students and local residents. They will also be collecting re-usable items for the charity Mind, and unwanted edible food for the Exeter-based charity St Petrocks.

The project is working alongside the ‘Student Re-Use’ scheme, also organised by the University. Items donated to the ‘Student Re-Use’ scheme will be given to a range of charities and to new students arriving in the autumn.
