Schools celebrate science at Exeter
School pupils from across the South West will measure the speed of light, discover artificial intelligence and see what happens to everyday objects at -200° C.
A series of events, organised by the University of Exeter for National Science and Engineering Week, will take place in Exeter and across Cornwall from 15 to 19 March.
Events at the University of Exeter on 17 and 18 March will introduce students aged 14 to 17 to a whole host of scientific ideas. These range from testing aeroplane propeller designs to investigating the biochemistry of the green blood proteins in sea squirts.
From 15 to 19 March, the ‘Borrow a scientist’ scheme will see science students from the University's Cornwall Campus go out to schools across Cornwall to share their expertise and enthusiasm. Students will be helping in applied science, biology, chemistry, engineering, geography, geology, mathematics and physics lessons. Some will be providing general support to teachers, while others will be helping students with particular projects.
By giving them access to its world-class laboratories and introducing them to scientists, many of them leaders in their fields, the University hopes to inspire them to consider a career in science.
Professor Janice Kay, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor for the University of Exeter said: “Exeter is a top ten University with an international reputation for groundbreaking research, boosted by an £80million investment in science. We are committed to sharing our expertise with people outside the University and encouraging young people to consider higher education. These events will bring schools from across the region into the University and we think they will be inspired by what they see and do.”
Now in its 17th year, National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) is a ten-day programme of science, engineering and technology events and activities across the UK aimed at people of all ages. This year NSEW takes place between 12–21 March with the theme of ‘Earth’. This complements the International Year of Biodiversity and includes everything from the Earth's amazing wildlife and people to its place in the Universe and how it works.
National Science and Engineering Week is funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and works in partnership with Engineering UK.
