New accommodation opened

The accommodation has been built by University Partnerships Programme (UPP) and was built using their Eco Residence model, which incorporates sustainability measures such as rainwater harvesting. Much of the accommodation also boasts stunning views across Exeter and the surrounding countryside. It represents a £133m investment by UPP in accommodation at Exeter.

Local residents living near the development were invited to a small opening ceremony and were given a tour of the new facilities. Representatives from the University, Students’ Guild, UPP and Cowlin Construction Ltd were also there.

Jeremy Lindley the University’s Director of Finance and Corporate Services said: “We are delighted that the first phase of accommodation is now completed and we think our students are going to be very impressed. Our partnership with UPP allows us to concentrate our resources on providing academic facilities; which in turn creates a better overall experience for our students. It’s also very important to us that as well as joining one of the top Universities in the UK, our students feel at home during their time here.”

The remaining new blocks at Birks Grange are currently under construction and will be opened next September.

“The completion of this first phase of new student accommodation is a fantastic step towards the vision we are helping the University of Exeter to create,” said Sean O’Shea, Chief Executive of UPP. “This development has been designed with sustainability in mind and to further enhance the student experience. Working with such a prestigious University is a real honour and we are looking forward to working closely with our construction partners and suppliers in delivering the next phase of development.”

The University, UPP and Cowlin Construction recently teamed up with the Prince’s Trust to give valuable work experience on the site to a group of unemployed young people. As a result some of those who took part have found employment. This was part of the National Skills Academy for Construction scheme which is working on the campus to provide new opportunities for the industry.
