Esther rides the waves of success

University of Exeter student claims bronze in the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Surfing Championships 2010. Esther Lempriere is a PGCE student studying Secondary Physical Education and originally from Jersey.

The three-day event held at Cornwall’s Fistral Beach in Newquay attracted over 350 student surfers from UK institutions. It is thought to be one of the biggest surf competitions in the world.

Esther’s bronze helped Exeter take the first place in the women’s team championships, along with fellow team members Georgia McCullough, Grace Brown and Gemma Prangle. 

On claiming bronze Lempriere said ‘I am delighted to win this medal, I have been in this competition four times and was determined to get a good result this year. The conditions were ideal for the first day but deteriorated throughout the weekend. The final was held in very small clean surf making wave selection and positioning vital.’

She added, ‘I thought the competition was very well run by the British Surfing Association, resulting in an enjoyable weekend for all involved.’

The Surf Club picked up 26 BUCS points over weekend. The University of Exeter is renowned for sporting success finishing 10th overall in the BUCS championships last year.
