University celebrates Winter Graduation

Professor Janice Kay, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor said “I am delighted to see so many students achieving post graduate awards, this shows that Exeter really is a world class research institution educating the academics, researchers and scientists of the future. I offer my congratulations to everyone graduating this weekend”

Exeter will award honorary degrees to Sir Peter Lampl and Harriet Lamb CBE.

Sir Peter Lampl, a graduate of Oxford University and the London Business School, is the chairman and founder of the Sutton Trust. Sir Peter founded the Trust in 1997 with the aim of improving social mobility through education, he was awarded an OBE in 1999 and a knighthood in 2003.

Harriet Lamb has been Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation since 2001. She has guided the Foundation through a period of staggering growth, which has seen estimated sales of Fairtrade products in the UK increase from £30m in her first year to more than £800m in 2009.  There are now 500 Fairtrade Towns – where a commitment to Fairtrade has been made by the council, shops and businesses – together with nearly 6,000 Fairtrade places of worship and 127 Fairtrade universities – including Exeter City and University.

The Blavatsky Trust will be admitted to the prestigious College of Benefactors. Thanks to the support of the Blavatsky Trust, the University of Exeter has been able to participate in a major innovation within the humanities, the establishment of a new academic subject with many interdisciplinary opportunities, namely Western Esotericism. 

The University of Exeter’s Chancellor, Floella Benjamin OBE will preside over all the ceremonies. She commented ‘This is a time for celebration for our students and their families, a culmination of years of hard work and an opportunity for us to send them out into the world with a valuable Exeter degree and the full backing of our staff. Our honorary graduands are leaders in their fields and we very much look forward to welcoming them here. They are people the University is extremely proud to be associated with.’

Graduation ceremonies take place from 22 to 23 January in the Northcott Theatre, University of Exeter, at 9.30am, 11.30am, 2.00pm and 4.00pm daily.
