Students in a lecture
Exeter Teaching Awards
While Universities across the country are trying to prove the quality of their teaching, the excellence of the lecturers and support staff at Exeter was celebrated recently at the Student Guild’s annual teaching awards.
The winners were selected by students in a survey organised by the University of Exeter Students’ Guild. The awards formally recognise outstanding teaching and support.
Bertie Archer, The University of Exeter Students’ Guild, Education Officer, said, “The Teaching Awards are about recognising, celebrating and promoting excellent teaching. This is the students’ way of saying thank you-to those staff who go above and beyond what is expected of them.”
The winners were:
Best Subject: Politics
Best Overall Lecturer: Alex Thompson, Business School
Best Graduate Teaching Assistant: Sam Vine, Sport and Health Science
Best Feedback Provider: Gary Abrahams, Business School
Innovative Teaching: Victoria Basham, Politics, Tremough
Inspiring use of Research in Teaching: Larbi Sadiki, Politics
Most Supportive Member of Staff: Jay Pengelly, History, Tremough
Subject with the Best Employability Support: The Business School
Subject with the Best Research Community: Classics and Ancient History.
Dr Alex Thompson, lecturer in Marketing at the Business School, said, “Winning the Best Overall Lecturer is an affirmation to my personal dedication to every student that enters my classroom. The Student’s Guild award represents an important intersection between a student’s desire for excellence in the classroom and a lecture’s desire for pedagogical innovation and rigour.”
He added, “This award also reaffirms the importance we place on the student experience at the University of Exeter. We have a long history of teaching excellence and it is humbling to be chosen as the Best Overall Lecturer amongst so many worthy candidates across this world class University.”
