Cornwall Campus hosts culture festival

Glamour historian Professor Dyhouse said, ‘I'm delighted to have been invited to talk about glamour at the Festival, and am really looking forward to meeting what I'm sure will be an intelligent and lively audience. It will be a particular pleasure to meet my co-speaker, Linda Grant - whose writing I've long admired and whose insights into how we feel about clothes are an inspiration. The only problem I have on these occasions is deciding what to wear...’

Academics from the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth will lead sessions entitled ‘Celtic Imaginings’, ‘Spiritual Landscapes and Paganism’, ‘Wild Places’, ‘Memory, People and Place in St Ives’, and ‘The Social and Cultural Meanings of Fashion and Glamour’. Professor Marion Gibson, lecturer in English at the University of Exeter is speaking in one of the events about Celtic mysticism and the imagination. She said, ‘We’re hoping that people will come from the wider community and see what we do here in teaching and researching literature and history. I’m going to be talking to my research collaborator Dr Garry Tregidga and Professor Jason Whittaker of University College Falmouth about Cornish writers and the ways in which they imagine the local landscape to be haunted and mystical.’

She added, ‘Writers like Daphne du Maurier saw Cornwall as a place where - as she put it - the ‘old gods’ were still just around the corner, and we’re going to be talking about that in our festival event’.

Running between 10.30am and 6.00pm, the Tremough Campus Culture Festival is a collaboration between the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth who share and jointly manage the Cornwall Campus. The Festival is delivered in association with the Daphne du Maurier Festival which takes place in Fowey 12- 21 May 2011.

Tickets for the one-day festival are priced at £19 (standard full day), £10 (standard half day, AM/PM) and £5 (students). All tickets include refreshments on arrival.
