New enterprise initiatives launch this week

First Spring Enterprise Week hatched

March 2012 sees the launch of a number of exciting new initiatives organised by the University’s Student Enterprise Support Group, a new group with a remit to support and encourage enterprise and entrepreneurship in our students made up of Employability and Graduate Development (EGD), the Students’ Guild, and Research and Knowledge Transfer (RKT)

A new series of events, under the banner of ‘Spring Enterprise Week’ (SEW), has been added to the calendar for the first time this year; it is running from the 5-9 March and a new part of ‘Widen your Options’ fortnight. Included in the week of activities across all campuses are ‘Introduction to Entrepreneurship’ workshops, HMRC drop-in sessions to help advise on the complicated world of tax affairs, Intellectual Property Commercialisation workshops and a full XING (business planning and simulation) day. Activities will count towards the Exeter Award and a full listing can be found on the EGD website.

Later in the month, EGD will be unveiling a Student Enterprise Suite in the Old Library. This is designed to provide individuals or groups of students with office space, allowing them to develop their business ideas in a supportive and informal environment.

Finally, Laura Bonner a full-time permanent member of EGD staff has been recruited to organise and deliver training to help and encourage students in their entrepreneurial efforts at the Exeter campuses. Anthonia Coppen is the lead for enterprise activities at the Tremough campus. Students can get in touch by emailing the team.

Paul Blackmore, Head of Employment and Graduate Development said “These are just the first of a whole range of initiatives that the Student Enterprise Support Group will be rolling out to nurture our budding student entrepreneurs. With the uncertainty in the UK economy set to continue, people with new business ideas will become increasingly important. We aim to make sure that our students are amongst those behind some of the brightest and the best new ventures of the future”.
