Exeter teams shortlisted for the CIMA UK global business challenge
Two University of Exeter teams are making up half the shortlist for the UK final of the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Global Business Challenge (GBC) 2012.
‘The Indivisibles’ and ‘Business Inception’ teams will now be fighting each other for a place to represent the UK at the global final in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 23 and 24 July, which promises to be a thrilling event.
The 2012 CIMA GBC is an international business management competition designed to bring out the very best in the next generation of business leaders by analysing a real life scenario and presenting innovative solutions. The UK competition has been organised in partnership with Barclays and sponsored by Tesco and Milkround.
This year, over 3500 teams from 22 countries have taken part in the competition. The University of Exeter teams fought against 76 other teams to get to the UK final on 15 June in London. ‘The Indivisibles’ and ‘Business Inception’ will face teams from Regents College, London and Middlesex University, representing the best teams in the country at the UK final and looking to become UK champions, securing a place at the global final in Sri Lanka.
Both teams are mentored by Chie Min Teng, Lecturer of Management Accounting at the University of Exeter Business School, who said of their achievement “We are delighted that two teams from the University of Exeter have made it to the UK Final of this global competition. This shows that our high quality research-led teaching has cultivated a group of students who have the cognitive and communication skills to excel as business leaders. Both teams comprise of wise young minds committed to the cause. We will draw on our previous experience in this competition and do our very best to hopefully win the UK Final and march on to capture the world crown.”

The two teams are as follows: The Indivisibles comprises Katharine Beattie (BA Accounting & Finance); Adam Broadbent (BA Business & Accounting); Ronald Liong (BA Accounting & Finance) and Benjamin White (BA History & Politics with Study Abroad)
Business Inception’s members are Ksenia Poponina (BA Business & Management with International Study); Elina Shakhtamirova (BA Economics & Finance); Prerak Thomson (BA Economics); Ho Chun Wong (BA Accounting & Finance)
The winning team will be flown by CIMA to the global final along with each winning team from Australia, Bangladesh, Mainland China, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, the Middle East, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zambia. Once there, they will present a business case to an audience of CIMA delegates and a judging panel of prestigious experts and battle it out to become the ‘Global Champion’.
The CIMA GBC provides students with a great opportunity to test the depth of their financial knowledge and expand upon their business acumen. In addition, it has previously led to internship opportunities with numerous reputable organisations. CIMA offers an international qualification in management accountancy and is the world’s leading and largest professional body in this field.
