The awards dinner in 2012

Teaching Awards 2013 - shortlist announced

Now in their fourth year, the Students Guild Teaching Awards have smashed all previous records receiving 2,415 individual nominations, up by 20 percent on the previous year. More than 500 individual academics have been nominated.

Following the publication of the shortlist, the winners will be announced at a ceremony in the University’s Great Hall on 2 May 2013.

Again this year students have been given a chance to acknowledge their favourite academic staff at the University and say ‘thank you’ to those staff who go above and beyond what is expected of them. These awards do not take account of seniority, only the positive effect academics have had on students. In addition, every member of staff who received a nomination will be sent all comments received about them (anonymised), as a way of recognising the effort that they have put in and hopefully to put a smile on their face.

Nominations were open in nine categories:

  • Best Lecturer
  • Innovative Teaching
  • Research Inspired Teaching
  • Best Feedback Provider
  • Most Supportive Member of Staff
  • Employability Support
  • Change Agents Champion
  • Best Postgraduate Teacher
  • Best Supervisor

In addition, two further awards will be presented for Best Research Community and Best Subject respectively. These also saw a huge increase in nominations this year - up from 17 in 2012 to 29 this year.

“This is the students’ way of saying they appreciate staff efforts,” said Guild Vice President Academic Affairs, Imogen Sanders. “We run these awards because we hope the nominations prove how valued and appreciated staff are by the students they teach, as well as showcasing examples of fantastic practice,” she added.
