PhD Award for Exeter Graduate

Alex Baldwin graduated from Exeter this summer with a first in BSc Biological and Medicinal Chemistry and will start his PhD with the University of Manchester next month. The aim of his research is to create new drugs which will reduce brain inflammation to stop the worsening of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

He is to receive one of the President’s Doctoral Scholar Awards which are awarded to just 100 of the most outstanding PhD scholars starting at Manchester this autumn. Successful recipients are chosen because of an outstanding academic track record, significant research potential and the ability to act as an ambassador for Manchester.

“I feel very honoured to have received this award, which I hope will shine an additional light on the success of Exeter and its graduates,” said Alex. “I’d like to thank the whole School of Biosciences for all the teaching and support I have had over the last three years.”

Alex will receive an extra £1,000 annually through the award and will be invited to a series of special events.
