The Forum will host the launch of the Allied Health Professions Research Network (AHPRN).

Event Links Research to Clinical Practice and Patient Care for Allied Health Professionals

The South West is home to world class health services research, the aim of which is to improve patient care and outcomes. It is also home to excellent clinical practitioners who have the best interests of their patients at the heart of their day-to-day working lives. But sometimes there is a gap between the research and the hands-on care of patients.

An event, to be held in Exeter on September 9 and the first of its kind for the region, looks to close that gap and encourage more clinical practitioners to carry out their own research projects. The Allied Health Professions Research Network (AHPRN), South West Hub, is organising a day for allied health professions called “Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice for AHPs”

It is very much a launch event for the AHPRN South West Hub and will bring together researchers, managers, clinicians and students. As well as presentations from some of the leading figures in this field, there will also be workshops that will cover issues such as getting started on research, practical tips on how to find research for in patient care, understanding systematic reviews, how to write a research grant and getting to grips with qualitative research.

Attendance at the event, which will take place at The Forum on the University of Exeter campus, is free of charge and is open to AHP academics, clinicians, managers, students and others interested in both undertaking and using research.

Dr Vicki Goodwin, one of the organisers of the event from the University of Exeter Medical School and whose own research has contributed to developments in policy and practice in physiotherapy for older people, said: “The sort of research that we cover is vital to the efficient and effective care of patients, with benefits to them, the people who care for them and the NHS. We want this event to encourage more AHPs to initiate and carry out their own research, and to more readily use the research findings that are already out there to improve the care they provide to their patients.”

Attendance at the event is free of charge but those wishing to attend must register in advance by Friday 16th August. More information is available via the online store.

The AHPRN South West Hub is supported by the University of the West of England, Bournemouth University, the University of Exeter and Plymouth University. The event is supported by the Research Design Service South West and the NIHR Peninsula Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (PenCLAHRC).
