University of Exeter breaks BUCS top five
The University of Exeter has finished fifth in the overall British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings for the 2012 / 2013 season.
The national yardstick against which University sport is measured, BUCS saw 155 institutions compete across over 50 sports this season. This year’s fifth place marks the highest ever finish for the University of Exeter, who have climbed the rankings every year for the past five years; breaking the top 10 in 2011 before finishing a record seventh in 2012. The result means that the sports men and women of the University have again exceeded the institution’s target, which was to hold their previous position.
Out-going Athletic Union president Joe Batten has born witness to the teamwork and camaraderie that has lead to this result. He said: “I have been overwhelmed by the level of commitment and dedication that I have seen from the AU Clubs and individuals competing at all levels of BUCS this year and our fifth place is thoroughly deserved. Over the past five years we have made huge progress as a sporting institution and to see us in the top five this year is brilliant. A huge well done to everyone who has worked so hard to achieve this amazing result, and a big thank you to all the coaches, volunteers, committee members and staff who helped make this possible.”
Every year over 1000 athletes from the University of Exeter represent their teams each in a variety of sports in BUCS events up and down the country. It has been a year of standout performances for the clubs which have included the Golf and Women’s Rugby clubs each winning their respective National Championships. A number of Exeter athletes have also joined the international ranks in Rugby, Shooting, Golf, Hockey, Rugby League, Triathlon and Tennis.
Assistant Director of Sport (Performance and Competitions) Nick Beasant added: “In BUCS every point matters and there is no single person who is responsible for this exceptional result. It is a true team effort and testament not only to the level of dedication and talent of our student athletes but also to the experience and commitment our coaching and support staff. Together we work hard to be as prepared and competitive as possible, but at the same time ensuring our students enjoy their sport and the time they spend representing Exeter on and off the field of play.”
University Sports Scholar, women’s Rugby captain, and England international, Amber Reed was also awarded BUCS Sports Woman of the year for her exceptional performances. The top England scorer in the Six Nations this year, Amber was unable to claim the award herself due to a tour of New Zealand with the squad.
Nick finished: “Amber’s commitment to rugby at the University and for her country has been an inspiration to those around her and is only matched by her modesty. Amber thoroughly deserves this award as it was her standout leadership which helped guide the Women’s Rugby team to their historic win at Twickenham in March. We look forward to congratulating her in person on her return to the UK.”
