Record breaking mega class tops best ever Big Bang

This year's event held at the University’s Streatham Campus on Thursday 27 June 2013 saw the largest yet interactive Big Bang science and engineering fair take shape in the Tennis Centre.

More than 90 judges assessed over 150 student projects for thirty highly coveted prizes while 80 local, national and international organisations at the forefront of their fields shared their skills and enthusiasm with the students.

The record for the UK’s biggest ever 'mega class' was broken when 1,050 young people attended a science, physics and chemistry class in the Great Hall led by National Space Academy Director Anu Ojha.

Emma Stephenson, Head of Widening Participation and UK Student Recruitment, University of Exeter said: “This is the third time the University of Exeter has hosted The Big Bang South West and the best yet! It has been great to see the full range of activity from young people in schools, further education, university departments and employers.

“We are sure that the day will have provided inspiration for students who are excited about STEM subjects and that they will continue to study, explore and innovate in these disciplines. The event pulls together the University's science research with its commitment to engage with young people at critical stages in their education.”

University of Exeter researchers shared their enthusiasm for all things science, technology, engineering and maths with hands-on exhibits including skulls, shells, skins and chemistry experiments in the exhibition hall.

The Education Business Partnership – South West (EBP-SW) which organises The Big Bang South West hailed the event a major success, with the UK 'Mega Class' record adding a final cherry to an already spectacular event, which brought students and some of most dynamic employers in the country together in the name Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
