Exeter’s Centre for Water Systems showcases expertise at industry event
The University of Exeter’s Centre for Water Systems will hold an Industry Awareness Day on Wednesday 27 November 2013 from 5 to 6.30 pm.
The event is being held to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Centre and will demonstrate how expertise at the centre can help local, national and international businesses.
The evening will showcase recent success stories from companies that have benefitted from working with the Centre, the training opportunities on offer as well as results from the latest research programmes. Staff will be on hand to find out about the research, training and recruitment needs of attendees.
The Centre for Water Systems has long been recognised for its pioneering research and consultancy in the fields of urban water management and hydroinformatics.
Examples of how existing industry partners are benefitting from working with the Centre include a recent project on urban drainage with civil engineering and environmental hydraulics consultancy, HR Wallingford. Artificial intelligence tools were used to develop a new computer model of how rainfall affects urban areas – information essential for managing urban drainage networks. The Centre also has a longstanding relationship with product specialists Hydro International and this includes projects using advanced computational fluid dynamics to guide product design and selection.
Professor Dragan Savic, Co-Director of the Centre for Water Systems at the University of Exeter said: “We are keen to encourage both local businesses and companies from further afield to find out more about the work we do. We are running this event to celebrate our 15th anniversary but also to find out how we can help to meet the water engineering needs of new and existing industry partners.”
Co-director Professor David Butler added “Collaborative research is a win-win situation, strongly encouraged by UK government.”
Expertise in the Centre lies in all areas of the urban water cycle including water distribution, sewerage and urban drainage, urban flooding, asset management, water efficiency, water quality, decision support, real-time management, sustainability, climate change resilience and sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS).
The Industry Awareness Day programme will consist of a series of short talks by industrial colleagues who will explain how they have benefitted from collaborating with the Centre. There will also be opportunities to find out about the Centre’s research and meet members of the academic team. This will be followed by a buffet reception and a chance to meet staff.
The event will take place at the Centre for Water Systems, Harrison Building, University of Exeter. Places are limited, please contact Alix Slater (a.j.slater@exeter.ac.uk) for further information and to book a place.
