More Mo's, More Money

Upper lips have been looking decidedly hirsute around the University of Exeter, as students and staff came together to raise funds for charity and promote men's health. More than £8,400 has been raised during ‘Movember’.

This is the first year that an attempt has been made to form a united team of students and staff.  More than 150 people registered on the Movember website, which also collects donations. 400 students are members of the Movember campaign society. Staff including the Estate Patrol team, other Campus Services colleagues, and senior managers including Geoff Pringle, Director of Campus Services and Sean Fielding, Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer have all joined in. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Sir Steve Smith, has lent his support.

The aim of exceeding last year’s total of £2,400 has been well surpassed, and this year’s total so far of £8,400 is still growing. Other University teams and individuals are also growing moustaches and raising separate funds.

The month kicked off with local barber Taji Kilic from Razor Turkish Barber coming to the Forum to give people a cutthroat clean shave to begin the great mo grow. Other events that have raised funds include a dodgeball tournament and ‘Row for a Mo’ challenge; while Exeter Mo Sistas saw 90 female student athletes do battle at the Sports Park, and the AU Olympics saw 12 teams from across the AU go head to head in a series of Sporting Challenges.

To mark the end of a Mo’mentous month, this Friday all students and staff are encouraged to dress up all day in a Movember theme and carry a donation box around with them – this aims to bring everybody together in a big Movember crescendo. Mo Sistas can also find Exeter College students offering free colourful dip dye style hair dying in the Forum.

Harry Williams, RAG Movember Co-ordinator, is sporting a ‘Freddy Mercury’ moustache. He says: “This is the biggest that Movember has ever been at the University of Exeter and more and more people are talking about what Movember is and what it promotes. It’s about raising money but most important is to break down the taboos of men’s health to get it spoken about; getting more people to get checks.”
