University recognised for positive progress on gender equality

The University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS) and the combined departments of Biology and Geography (CLES Cornwall) at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus are delighted to announce that both departments have been awarded Athena SWAN Bronze department awards. These awards recognise achievements on progressing gender equality by having action plans in place which show the progress made together with an action plan for future improvement.

The Athena SWAN Charter recognises that the advancement of science, engineering and technology is fundamental to quality of life across the globe. It is therefore vitally important that women are adequately represented in what has traditionally been, and is still, a male dominated area. It suggests that science as a discipline cannot reach its full potential unless it can benefit from the talents of the whole population, and until women and men can benefit equally from the opportunities it affords. The University joined the Charter in June 2011 and received University Bronze Status in March 2012.

Professor Nick Talbot, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Transfer at the University said: “I am delighted that CLES Cornwall and UEMS have both been recognised by the Athena SWAN Charter with Bronze department awards. I am pleased to support and champion the work being carried out at the University in relation to the Athena SWAN Charter. At Exeter we wish to put in place a culture and environment which supports women to reach their full potential and these awards recognise the progress we have made.”
