Rory re-emerges as an award winning artist

Rory, 35, graduated from the University of Plymouth in 2001 with a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art, and has been the University’s Community Liaison Officer since 2008.

After having two children, Rory now aims to re-emerge in the artist scene, with plans for a photo exhibition at the university, as well his new illustrative work on a book of poems.

The Fine Artist submitted five photographs of images made up of handwritten words, exploring the power and limitations of words themselves.

“The pieces of art really need to be looked at closely to truly appreciate the detail,” Rory said.

“After taking a break from art, I'm now getting into a better rhythm with life, and want to make the most of my degree.

“My current work has a bit of an elemental theme, exploring the forces of nature.”

Sponsored by Helpful Holidays, the Devon Open Studios competition offers a bursary to its winners to help support them in the next steps of their career.

Entrants had to submit five photographs of their work, along with a 500 word  explanatory piece.

Devon Open Studios, who ran the competition, are an award-winning public art gallery based in Honiton.

Angela Carter, the gallery’s curator, said: “There is such a wealth of new talent in the county and THG is always keen to support and encourage emerging Devon-based artists.”
