Showcase highlighted innovation to improve healthcare and treatment
A wide range of research which is advancing knowledge on some of the greatest health challenges of our time was showcased at a dynamic event.
The University of Exeter hosted an event which brought together health professionals with an interest in health-related discovery to network and forge new collaborations.
More than 160 projects from organisations including the University, its Medical School, the Met Office and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust were highlighted, with a poster display hosted in the flagship Forum building.
The event also included keynote speeches from Dr Francesca Palombo (College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences - advances in spectroscopic imaging of disease), Dr Richard Chahwan (College of Life and Environmental Sciences, the duality of the DNA damage response in our immune system), and Professor Chema Valderas (Medical School, advancing research for making Primary Care (and the NHS) truly patient-centred.
Professor Angela Shore, Vice-Dean Research for the University of Exeter Medical School, said: “It was gratifying to see the spectrum of research undertaken across the University and beyond, all with the ultimate aim of improving care and treatment for people in the South West and beyond. Our mission is to undertake excellent research, through discovery to personalised care and healthy communities. To achieve this, it’s paramount that we work closely with our partners in a region with a growing reputation for healthcare innovation.”
The winner of the poster display, as voted for by visitors, was Ines Castro (Biosciences) for her poster Peroxisome Dynamics in Health and Disease. Specially commended were Philip Waters (Medical School), for In Search of the Giant's Underpants, and Dr Giles Cory (Medical School), for Making the Message Stick.
