University of Exeter strengthening Humanities links with China
A delegation of 12 academics travelling with Professor Nick Kaye to China will be the University’s largest ever from one single college.
They will visit Peking University (PKU) before flying to Shanghai for a Research Colloquium with Fudan University, “Reading across Cultures: Global Configurations of Reception, Adaptation and Transmission”, in collaboration with the College’s Centre for Translating Cultures.
Professor Kaye said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to return to Peking University and Fudan University with so many colleagues from English and Modern Languages. We anticipate that a wide range of collaborations in staff research and postgraduate supervision and teaching will emerge through our joint ventures with these institutions. Collaborating with academic colleagues in leading Universities is a vital and exciting part of the College’s international role”.
Delegates will also meet with researchers from Fudan’s Department of Chinese Language and Literature, and the National Institute for Humanistic Studies. Modern Languages will launch a full joint honours programme in Chinese in 2014/15, offering Chinese language and culture modules, and the opportunity for students to spend a year studying with Fudan or other Chinese partners.
The visit builds on the previous visit by Professor Nick Kaye, Professor Jane Spencer and Professor Emma Cayley as part of the Vice Chancellor’s delegation last November.
At Peking University the delegation will meet Professor Cheng Zhaoxiang, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Directors of departments as well as individual academics to explore potential research connections.
Peking University is ranked 5th in the QS Asian University Rankings 2013, 23rd in the world for Arts and Humanities subjects and 46th in the QS World University Rankings 2013. It is also ranked 45th in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2013-2014. Fudan is placed 23rd in the QS Asian University Rankings 2013. It is considered to be the 5th best university in China.
