PhD research celebrated at showcase

83 of the Medical School’s PhD students presented their work at the Palace Hotel, Torquay, in the two-day Exeter Annual Research Event on May 4 and 5.

Ana Cruz, whose research was on ‘Mechanisms of muscle anabolic resistance in diabetes’ and Rebecca Hardwick, who studied ‘How do third sector organisations providing healthcare services on behalf of the NHS use research and other knowledge in their work?’ both won first prize for the quality of their presentation and abstract. Rebecca Shellock and Amy Backhouse were runners-up, with Paul Weightman Potter and Tom Hames receiving commendations for their research.

Abi Russell and Tom Ridler won the newly introduced poster presentation event, launched for the first time this year.

The event gave students valuable experience of presenting their work, as well as an opportunity to meet and network with peers.

Professor Angela Shore, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the University of Exeter Medical School, said: “It’s always a great pleasure to see the spectrum of research that PhD students have undertaken.
