Engagement Survey makes a difference with £3,556 charity donations

The University donated £1 for each completed survey to ensure the Employee Engagement Survey would have a positive impact for our local communities.

Here's how this money has impacted our chosen charities:

Hospices (shared between Hospiscare and Cornwall Hospice Care) £1,002
Both hospices provide care for local people with terminal illnesses, and help to support their families.

Tina Naldrett, Director of Care at Hospiscare, said: “Hospiscare enjoys fantastic support from the University of Exeter and I was delighted to learn about this latest donation of £501.”

“This sum will fund 12 visits by our community nurse team to patients in their own homes, where they can provide specialist care and advice to those living with a terminal illness, at a time in their lives when they need our help the most. On behalf of my colleagues here at Hospiscare, thank you to everyone at the University who took part in the survey and for helping to support our work across Exeter, Mid and East Devon.”

Oliver Hoare, Head of Fundraising for Cornwall Hospice Care, said: “We are delighted to have the support of the University of Exeter and this fantastic fundraising initiative. Over 80% of the care we provide to those terminally ill in Cornwall is funded by those in our community. This generous sum will fund almost 30 hours of nursing care. On behalf of all at Cornwall Hospice Care, thank you”.

Foodbanks (to be shared between Exeter and Penryn foodbanks) £1,437
The Exeter and Penryn foodbanks make sure that no one in our community faces going hungry. They provide three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them in crisis.

Mark Richardson from Exeter Foodbank said: “Thank you so much for thinking of us and please pass on our thanks to everyone involved. We are getting so much support from the University at the moment in so many ways and we are very grateful.”

Cancer Research UK £1,117

Cancer Research UK fund scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer and find kinder treatments. They also provide cancer information to the public.

Nikki Collins, Senior Local Fundraising Manager, Cancer Research UK, South West, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to the staff at the University of Exeter for your generous donation of £1,117 for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research. This money will help us towards our target to reach 3 in 4 patients surviving cancer by 2034. It’s thanks to the support of people like yourselves, raising these vital funds that enable our researchers to make amazing progress in the fight against cancer.  Thank you.”

The Employee Engagement Survey takes place every two years; this was the second survey that included charity fundraising. The funds raised beat the 2016 total by £250. Colleagues voted to select the charities from a longlist in October 2018 and could choose where their £1 donation went when completing their survey.
