Fudan-Exeter relationship expands into Artificial Intelligence
Key representatives from the University of Exeter recently travelled to Fudan University’s School of Data Science to develop a series of new initiatives.
In May 2019, the Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Exeter will host an `Exeter-Fudan Collaboration Building Workshop in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence’ that will provide an opportunity for researchers from both institutions to share their expertise, and to identify opportunities for future collaborative research.
During their visit to Exeter, participants in the May workshop will also visit the prestigious Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for Data Science and Artificial intelligence, of which the University of Exeter is a member.
From the summer of 2019, researchers will be able to take advantage of the Fudan-Exeter Fellowship Award that gives academics wide-ranging opportunities to develop their academic talents and enhance the research portfolio of the two institutions.
Professor Gavin Shaddick, Chair of Data Science and Statistics at the University of Exeter said: "This workshop is a fantastic opportunity for researchers from both institutions to come together and work on both the methodological and applied aspects of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.
"There is a wealth of expertise in this area in both Fudan and Exeter and in May we will discuss the major challenges in this area, and ways in which we can work together to lead the development of methods and application in this rapidly developing field."
In addition to the workshop, the two Universities are developing a postgraduate exchange programme, designed to enable students from Fudan to join the training in AI and Data Science offered within the University of Exeter’s new Centre for Doctoral Training in Environmental Intelligence: Data Sciences and AI for Sustainable Futures.
The centre, led by Professor Gavin Shaddick and a team of world-leading researchers, seeks to use pioneering research in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to help create a better understanding of the complex interactions between the environment, climate, natural ecosystems, human social and economic systems, and health.
