Celebrate Diwali in Exeter with fireworks, food and dancing
Diwali will be marked at the University of Exeter with a free spectacular firework display, dancing, food and storytelling.
Students have organised the community event, to which all are invited, to help celebrate the Hindu Festival of Lights, which honours the triumph of good over evil.
Guests can take part in dance workshops, watch Dhol drummers, have henna tattoos and sample delicious Indian food. There will be storytelling and craft activities for children, and the chance to dress up in Bollywood outfits. There will also be dance performances from students.
The event is organised by members of the Exeter Asian Society and Exeter Hindu Society, and staff from the University of Exeter and the Students' Guild. It will take place on Saturday 26 October, from 2:30 to 7pm at the University of Exeter’s Forum. The fireworks can be seen from the XFI building from 6:45pm.
Organiser Vineela Thotapalli, President of the University of Exeter Hindu Society and third year medical student, said: “We have been working hard planning this event and are really looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible to campus to celebrate Diwali with us.
“There is something for all ages. It’s lovely for us to have a touch of home, and incorporate our family traditions into the event and share them with others. Food is always a highlight of Diwali for me, and at home we eat a desert my mum only prepares for the festival. I think at the celebrations in Exeter this year the storytelling will be a highlight.”
Professor Sir Steve Smith, University of Exeter Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive, said: “Our Diwali celebrations are one of the highlights of the year for everyone on campus and in the city, and we look forward to marking the occasion with the community. Our students have done a fantastic job helping to organise fun activities for all ages.”
