Garfield Weston Collaboratory officially opened

A dedicated research space within the new Stella Turk Building on the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus, has been named in recognition of the exceptional generosity of the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Over the past decade the Foundation has supported several important capital projects including the development of the Living Systems Institute and campus regeneration programmes. The latest grant of £250,000 will support pioneering research taking place in Cornwall.

The Garfield Weston Collaboratory provides a home for researchers, scientists, staff and students to come together and work on pioneering approaches to combat global environmental threats and offer sustainable solutions.

Opening the new space, Professor David Hosken, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Cornwall, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Garfield Weston Foundation for their support and for helping us realise our ambitious research plans.

“Expertise here at Penryn covers renewable energy, conservation and economics, healthcare, and culture and government, all under an overarching theme of sustainable futures. This space allows us to build on our research strengths and further expand our capabilities in sustainability.”

Jana Khayat, trustee of the Garfield Weston Foundation, unveiled a commemorative plaque and officially open the Garfield Weston Collaboratory on Friday, 18 October 2019.

The Garfield Weston Foundation was established in 1958 by the Weston family and is one of the largest and most respected charitable institutions in the UK. It supports a wide range of causes across the country with almost 2,000 charities benefiting from grants totalling more than £70 million each year.
