Increased connectivity will see faster file transfers, improved online collaboration and better teaching experiences between Exeter and Penryn
Exeter IT delivers better connectivity experience for Exeter to Penryn collaboration
Researchers and other colleagues at Exeter and Penryn will soon benefit from increased connectivity capacity between the two locations. This means faster file transfers, better online collaboration, improved online teaching experiences and more.
The connectivity demands of the research community, as well as other staff, has outgrown the existing provision, so from Thursday 5 March the network will be significantly upgraded from 1Gbps to 10Gbps. In addition to improving the user experience, Exeter IT is ensuring that there will be less chance of disruption to connectivity, data transfer or compute requests between the two locations. For researchers, this upgrade is also an enabler for an improved research data storage service.
Alan Hill, Chief Information and Digital Officer said, “Everyday our researchers do great work, but in the past have experienced delays, bottlenecks and reduced ability to collaborate, which does not support the growing requirements in the modern digital environment. By upgrading the bandwidth connection to 10Gbps, the Exeter IT team are putting in place more capacity, which will enhance connectivity for research activity and improve collaboration through voice and video conferencing”.
This essential upgrade work will be carried out between 17:00 to 19:00 on 04 March so please be aware there may be some disruption. The network connection from Penryn to Exeter as well K-Spa users (Truro) may be affected. Local (Falmouth) network at Penryn will be unaffected.
