Medical student wins highly competitive scholarship to intern with top Medical Journal

A medical student has won a highly competitive scholarship to intern with BMJ, going through an intense selection process to achieve the funding.   

The Clegg Scholarship, awarded by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) is given to only four candidates from across Europe in previous years. The scholarship gives students an internship at top London offices to learn how a leading journal operates. 

Viktorija Kaminskaite, a fourth-year BMBS student at the University of Exeter Medical School, was successful in winning the scholarship. She said: “I’m still in shock that I was selected for the scholarship, the application process was intense, but I’m so excited to have been selected. It will be an excellent opportunity for me to improve my writing skills and see how a world-class journal is run.”

The BMJ host the successful interns for four-to-six weeks to give them an insight into medical communications. Students work alongside the editorial team to produce articles, cover new stories and create educational material.

Applicants have to go through a stringent selection processes involving writing numerous articles, CV checks and a telephone interview to be selected.

The BMJ is a world-leading medical research journal which has been publishing research since 1840. BMJ have been offering the scholarship for medical students within the EU to gain insight into how a medical journal is run, get involved in creating engaging educational material, and learn how to get published.
