Exploring the Exe Estuary with Tidelines community project

The project, called Tidelines and run in partnership with the University of Exeter, brings together arts, science, local knowledge and academic research to engage local members of the community with the estuary.

Project coordinators Jo Salter and Anne-Marie Culhane, will create a Community Hub to foster collaborative research between Exe estuary residents, students and researchers, to inspire new ideas to make a direct and positive impact on the local area.

Tidelines has created a range of activities to connect us with our local estuary which you can take part in during lockdown via their website.

Later in the year Tidelines will be running public events exploring key themes of the estuary, engaging community groups and local residents.

Anne-Marie Culhane said “Our objective is to work towards creating sustainable futures for Exe estuary residents, human and non-human at a time of considerable change.  It makes sense to link the academic expertise in University of Exeter with the local environment and to invite residents to work more actively with academics to inform relevant research.”

Tidelines is partnering with the University of Exeter as part of the Socially Engaged Universities Project funded by the Erasmus + Programme and the Global Systems Institute with additional funding from a South West Creative Technology Fellowship.

Tidelines have been supported in developing the project by Wild East Devon & Wild Exmouth, the Exe Estuary Partnership, Transition Exmouth and Kaleider.

Tim Dafforn, from East Devon District Council Countryside said “Tidelines is an exciting community-based project, drawing on resident’s experiences and developing new ways to understand the internationally important habitats that we are part of. This project will develop community awareness of the ever-changing coast, deepen our relationship to it and support positive action. We will be a strong partner helping to build greater links between people and nature”.
