University sponsors Exeter College Adult learner of the year award

The University of Exeter has sponsored Exeter College’s Adult Learner of the Year Award, as part of an ongoing commitment to supporting adult learners.

The Exeter College Student Awards moved to a virtual celebration this year to recognise some of their exceptional student achievements. In total, 21 categories were awarded, celebrating students from across the College’s wide range of subjects and specialties.

Adult Learner of the Year was won by Sian Cox, who has excelled on her Access to Higher Education in Health & Social Care (Nursing) at the College.

Professor Tim Quine, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University of Exeter and Governor at Exeter College, said: “The University of Exeter is delighted to have been able to sponsor the Exeter College Student Awards, as it recognises and celebrates the incredible achievements of students at Exeter College, especially considering all the challenges we have been through the past year.

“It speaks closely to our partnership with Exeter College and also our commitment to support students from all backgrounds to succeed through the power of education.

“As a Governor and a friend of the College I am privileged to see excellent work here and the unwavering commitment to high quality learning and teaching among all colleges and students.”

Exeter College Principal and Chief Executive John Laramy CBE said, “The Exeter College Student Awards are always a highlight of the College year, and despite making the decision to move it online this year, this has remained true.

“Every year the talent, skill and commitment of our students is truly impressive, but the last year has really shown that even in a pandemic, our students excel.  Tonight I would like to congratulate the award winners, but also recognise that every student over the last year has shown, through their attitude and study, why we are and remain an outstanding College.

The University’s partnership with Exeter College is deep and long standing, combining expertise from two major education institutes within the city of Exeter and leaders in the further and higher education sectors nationally.

Roisin Quinn, Student Access and Further Education Relationship Manager at the University of Exeter, said: “The University of Exeter is committed to supporting mature learners access and succeed in Higher Education. We currently run outreach events specific for mature learners with information about applying to university and the support available.  We also have dedicated staff to answer any questions they may have.

“All mature learners who come to study at the University of Exeter are invited to an Enhanced Induction Programme which provides  a comprehensive guide to all the support services on offer at the university, for example academic skills training, wellbeing and financial support. In the coming year we will be working closely with the ‘Access to Higher Education’ course leads and the ‘Adult Learner Experience’ team at Exeter College as we develop a formalised support programme that provides progression routes to the University of Exeter for their adult learners. In the future we will be looking to expand this programme into Further Education colleges across the South West.

“Enormous congratulations to all our 2022 Award Winners from us at the University of Exeter!”
