Exeter Alumnus wins Elektra Award for Rising Star in Engineering 2011
Adrian Carter (MEng Electronic Engineering 2008) was recently named ‘Rising Star – New Engineer of the Year’ at the Elektra 2011 European Electronics Industry Awards.
The award recognises talented and ambitious young engineers, new graduates or engineers in their first five years in the industry. Judges look for a combination of both technical knowledge and practical application of skills in specific projects.
Adrian works for Pico Technology as an Analogue Development Engineer. He was praised particularly for his work on the PS3000 oscilloscope. The PicoScope 3000 Series are the highest–performance USB–powered oscilloscopes available. They are ideal for use in all areas of test and measurement - from manufacturing and repair, to research and development.
After designing a data logger product, Adrian carried out a major upgrade of the firm’s 8-bit oscilloscope. Despite having to learn new skills in hardware and firmware design, the work was finished on time, in nine months.
Reflecting on his time at Exeter, Adrian feels his Electronic Engineering course was invaluable preparation for his current role: ‘The course was quite Hardware intensive and included quite a bit of analogue design. This was a key element in getting my job at Pico. The programme I took at Exeter got me ready and gave me confidence to take on anything and teach myself what I need to get the job done.’
