Alumnus MP gives insights into the centre of government
Alumnus MP Sajid Javid recently returned to Exeter to give students insights into banking, politics and his role at the centre of government.
Sajid Javid (Economics and Politics, 1991) has been Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon George Osborne MP, since October 2011.
The MP for Bromsgrove spoke at length about the causes of the banking crisis, the government's regulatory reforms, as well answering a range of other questions on topics ranging from tax to military intervention.
Professor Andrew Massey, Head of the Department of Politics, said: "It was a delight to be able to welcome Sajid Javid back to Exeter, twenty-one years after his graduation. Having forged a tremendously successful career in business he is now a respected MP and member of the Treasury team. His unique insight into banking and politics provided the basis for his lecture to our students.
"A naturally gifted speaker, he delivered an enthralling talk on banking regulation, but afterwards spent over half an hour answering student questions on a wide range of topical subjects. We are very grateful to him for taking the time to do this and for consciously giving our current cohort of undergraduates the benefit of his experience. We sincerely hope he comes back to visit us again soon."
Before entering Parliament at the last General Election in 2010, Sajid enjoyed a very successful career in business. Sajid became a Vice-President of Chase Manhattan Bank at the age of 25. He was later headhunted by Deutsche Bank in London to help build its business in developing countries.
He was a specialist in helping to raise investment in developing countries and considered a global leader in this field. He left Deutsche Bank as a senior Managing Director in the summer of 2009 to stand for election.
Sajid, whose father was a bus driver, joined the Conservative Party in 1988. He has been involved in charity work throughout his career and raised £710,000 in a single event for the Disasters Emergency Committee and led a charity expedition to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro for Help the Aged.
The MP is also a Trustee of London Early Years Foundation, London’s largest childcare charity.
