McFly opening slot for Exeter alumnus' band
A band started by an Exeter alumnus has won a battle of the bands competition to support McFly.
Virgin Soldiers placed a video of a song onto the McFly website and received nearly 3,000 Likes, putting them in the top ten of all the bands. This earned them a place as the opening act at McFly’s gig in Folkestone on March 14 - part of the Keep Calm and Play Louder national tour.
It’s not Virgin Soldiers’ only success this year – in October they will support legendary artist Joan Armatrading at her concert in Portsmouth.
James Beeny came to Exeter in 2005 to study History and Ancient History. When he left the University he played cricket professionally for Sussex Second XI for two years. He then swapped his cricket bat for a guitar and formed Virgin Soldiers.
He said: “We were really delighted and honoured when we heard we'd won one of the slots to support McFly - it's a fantastic opportunity for us. I imagine we'll be nervous on the day but we're looking forward to the experience and will do our very best for our families and supporters.”
The six-piece band combines male and female vocals, with a mix of contemporary and classical instruments. Their set ranges from high energy songs to harmonious ballards.
Virgin Soldiers will release their debut track Moon Song later this year.
