Athlete motivates achieving pupils

International beach volleyball player Lucy Boulton (Sports Sciences 2010) inspired Exeter’s youngsters at the Excellence in Exeter Awards.

Lucy has spent the past six years playing indoor and beach volleyball at an international level and is one of the UK’s brightest young sports stars.

She was back in the Great Hall to help celebrate the achievements of pupils from schools across Exeter – including academic, arts and sporting successes, as well as service to the community. The event is hosted by the University to mark their achievements and encourage young people to engage with higher education.

Over 180 pupils from secondary and specialist schools and Exeter College attended the event and heard Lucy talk about her sport, time at Exeter and her positive attitude.

Lucy, who is also involved in the UK Sporting Champions scheme, said: “I had such a great time at Exeter and I felt like I wanted to give something back, so I was only too happy to be a part of this special event.

“It was brilliant to hear the stories of these young people and they should be commended for what they have achieved. Hopefully this is just the start for them – and they can inspire others too.”

Lucy was able to combine her degree with training and international competitions, and had a two year break from her studies in order to compete.

She praised staff across the University for their support: “Without their help I don’t think I would have been able to get through my degree alongside my volleyball commitments.

“My studies in sports science have also helped me a lot. Some of the science I learned I have been able to put into practice in my own training.”
