Exeter University Club reformed

The University has had a Convocation – or statutory alumni group – since it received its charter in 1955. Historically most English universities established these groups to ensure graduates had a voice within governance, and a link to, their university.

Much of its support came from the Exeter University Club which organised social activities through regional branches, and was a continuation of an alumni association formed long before Exeter obtained full university status in 1955. The Club merged with Convocation in 1992.

Over recent years alumni relations have evolved and grown substantially at Exeter and at other universities, with the creation of a dedicated department within the University, which has in turn led to more events and increased engagement.

Changes in university governance diminished the statutory role of Convocation, whilst the massive increase in the student body weakened its claim to be truly representative.

Although there remained interest in regional social activities for alumni, the recruitment of unpaid volunteers to organise and carry out the statutory functions of Convocation reached crisis point. In support of Convocation, the University offered to pay for a consultant, selected by Convocation Officers, to help map a way forward. In the light of the consultant's recommendations, and after lengthy consultation with its members, as well as with the University, it was decided to wind down the statutory functions of Exeter’s Convocation.

"We had to recognise that Convocation, in its statutory role, was no longer fit for purpose," said Melody Dougan, former Convocation Chair (History 1958),"but the commitments made by the University's senior staff to continued representative alumni links, and the creation of an Alumni Network Group should ensure that the views of alumni are still very much heard at Exeter.

"If anything, there is more genuine involvement and input into the University now than ever before. But it is clear that there is still a role for the former Exeter University Club, and that it will continue to exist."
 
An important aspect of Convocation was the social calendar which developed and which continues to this day, ranging from day trips to national landmarks, visits to the theatre and overseas travel. All those activities are now being managed by the new Exeter University Club.

“The new Exeter University Club had its inaugural meeting in June 2012,” said Ann Paddon, President (Geography 1959). “We want to continue to promote links with the University. We aim also to maintain the active programme of social and cultural events mostly organised by our regional branches, which had been an important aspect of Convocation.

"The events range from visits to places of interest, to theatre trips and overseas holidays. We do hope alumni will get in touch to find out more and to join us.”
