Public vote in awards for alumnus company
A company started by two Exeter alumni is in the running for recognition in a regional business award – with one category decided by a public vote.
Alastair Banks and James Dawkins (both Computer Science 2000) set up web design and online marketing company Optix Solutions whilst studying at the University 13 years ago. Optix is still based in the city.
The company has been shortlisted in two categories of the Express and Echo Business Awards – including the Employer of the Year award. They are one of just two companies to be shortlisted in that category and the winner will be decided by tweets of support from the public. Among the initiatives they cite as reasons to win are clearly sharing their vision with staff, empowering them to have a voice within the company and regular staff lunches away from the office.
Optix is also a finalist in the Entrepreneur of the Year category.
Alastair has returned to the University many times as a volunteer, sharing his expertise and experiences with current students and staff.
