University of Exeter breaks BUCS top five
The University of Exeter has finished fifth in the overall British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings for the 2012 / 2013 season – it’s highest ever position.
The national yardstick against which University sport is measured, BUCS saw 161 institutions compete across over 50 sports this season. Exeter has climbed the rankings every year for the past five years; breaking into the top 10 in 2011.
Out-going Athletic Union president Joe Batten said: “I have been overwhelmed by the level of commitment and dedication that I have seen from the AU Clubs and individuals competing at all levels of BUCS this year and our fifth place is thoroughly deserved.
“Over the past five years we have made huge progress as a sporting institution and to see us in the top five this year is brilliant. A huge well done to everyone who has worked so hard to achieve this amazing result, and a big thank you to all the coaches, volunteers, committee members and staff who helped make this possible.”
Every year over 1,000 athletes from the University represent their teams in a variety of BUCS sports events up and down the country. It has been a year of standout performances for the clubs including the Womens’ Rugby and Golf and teams which won their respective National Championships. A number of Exeter athletes have also joined the international ranks in Rugby, Shooting, Golf, Hockey, Rugby League, Triathlon and Tennis.
Assistant Director of Sport (Performance and Competitions) Nick Beasant added: “In BUCS every point matters and there is no single person who is responsible for this exceptional result. It is a true team effort and testament not only to the level of dedication and talent of our student athletes but also to the experience and commitment our coaching and support staff.
“Together we work hard to be as prepared and competitive as possible, but at the same time ensuring our students enjoy their sport and the time they spend representing Exeter on and off the field of play.”
