James Littlefair and Jessica Hill
First interns on the job for South Devon University Technical College
South Devon’s newest UTC school has taken the next step in partnership with the University of Exeter. The University Technical College, due to open for 14 and 16 year olds in September 2015, has appointed two recent graduates from the University.
James Littlefair, 21, from Cambridge, and Jessica Hill, also 21, from Torquay, have been appointed on 6-week internships to support the UTC open events programme.
Jessica achieved a first class honours degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences with proficiency in French. Having grown up in Torquay, she is familiar with the educational needs of young people in Torbay, ‘Too many people leave school without the necessary skills required to get a good job. I believe that the UTC will help students enhance these skills and prepare them for the world of work’ said Jessica.
James graduated in Economics and will soon begin his Masters degree in International Management. James is excited by new educational opportunities for local teenagers ‘I strongly believe that young people should have several options for free education available to them and that it is the right of students and parents to choose which route would best suit them.’
James and Jess applied for the internship through the University of Exeter student business partnership scheme. James says ‘I was excited by the opportunity to take a project from a formative stage and to help turn it into a reality.’ Among a plethora of roles, the pair will be responsible for developing the website and Facebook. They will be visiting local towns across the area to engage with local young people and spread awareness of what South Devon UTC could do for them.
Places at the open events can be booked on-line Feedback on the UTC can be provided via an on-line survey for the chance to win an i-Pad mini.
